Fourth Graders Take 2nd Place in Ducks Shootout Tournament

image001

Fourth graders from Stoneybrooke’s San Juan and Ladera Ranch campuses came out ahead of 22 other teams in the Ducks Street Hockey championship Saturday! Our fourth grade team made Stoneybrooke history Saturday May 9, 2015 by making it to the final championship round of the S.C.O.R.E. Shootout Tournament sponsored by the Anaheim Ducks. Starting off with a 4-0 shutout, Stoneybrooke went on to the championship round for the first time ever, winning second place in the tournament overall. The team was comprised of Andrew, Ava, Jake (goalie), Andrew, Lauren, Roman, Gavin, Dillon, Russell, Cole, Kira, Luke, Luciana, Joshua, and Sydney and coached by Pete Fronte, Paul Brien, Tom Wright, and Gary Shoup. In the final game, Friends Christian School proved to be a formidable opponent, which was no surprise as they have won the Shootout championship 7 out of the last 8 years. Even so, the Stoneybrooke team never gave up, fighting hard to the final buzzer. The highlight of the championship round actually happened before the game began. Friends Coach Darren Berezowski called both teams to “center ice.” The two opposing teams came together in a single circle as Coach Berezowski pointed out that two Christian teams were about to compete in this championship game. “So,” he asked the players, “no matter who wins, who gets the glory?” Without hesitation, the fourth grade boys and girls from both schools answered loudly, “God!” If you would like more details about the tournament, check out this link: Ducks Host 350 Fourth Graders

Junior Highers On a Kindness Mission

Stoneybrooke Junior High’s administrative assistant, Mrs. Hershock, recently took her discipleship group out on a local mission to spread kindness and love to strangers. Their adventure included filling laundromat coin slots with quarters, handing out candy bars, roses, notes, and balloons to people on the street, and taping microwaveable popcorn bags to Red Box machines. They continued spreading love at Starbucks by “paying it forward” for the next person’s drink and by leaving notes with dollar bills in random places for people to find throughout a Dollar Tree store and a Ralph’s. Along the way, they interacted with people, shared smiles, and spread the love of Jesus through their actions. The girls were blessed themselves through giving, and they can’t wait to do it again!

SB Fourth Graders Fund Ugandan Well

10

Each class at Stoneybrooke takes on a mission project each year, and this year, Mr. Pike’s fourth grade class at the San Juan campus has been working with a nonprofit organization called Wells of Life, which builds water wells in Uganda. Wells of Life founder and CEO, Nick Jordan, just happens to be a Stoneybrooke dad, so he helped Mr. Pike’s class get started with the project last year. The cost to build a clean water well in Uganda is $6,000, so Mr. Jordan matched Mr. Pike’s class with a business partner who donated $4,000 to the project. Mr. Pike’s fourth graders still needed to raise the balance of $2,000, so they raised support through bake sales, car washes, birthday donations, and by using the earnings students made for doing household chores. Many of the parents partnered with their children by matching their financial donations, too! The generosity and motivation of these fourth grade students was truly extraordinary! Mr. Pike’s class recently met their goal and the well is now built. An entire village in Uganda now drinks safe clean water as a result of our efforts at Stoneybrooke!
